The education system is always adapting and adjusting. Classrooms are revolving. They utilize new technology and personal development techniques to improve the lives of their students. Educators are exploring new and unique ways to engage their students with the world around them. Science is a key factor in education advances, whether it’s how neuroscience plays a role in mindfulness studies or the impact of augmented reality in teaching geometry. Here are some of the major education trends unfolding today, each of which helps point to a new approach in bringing science and creativity together.

1. Dynamic Mindfulness

As a proactive response to a sharp increase in childhood mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, educators are combating stress by introducing mindfulness. Mindfulness is a state of awareness — of feelings, thoughts and physical sensations.

By increasing awareness of the present moment, students are better able to cope with stressful situations. Research shows that teaching mindfulness in schools not only reduces stress but also improves attention. Educators can incorporate mindfulness techniques by allowing students to take a moment before an exam to sit with their eyes closed and focus on the present.

Teaching mindfulness in schools is beneficial for kindergartners and high school students alike, and the trend doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon.

2. Artificial Intelligence

A study reporting on the U.S. education sector from 2018 to 2022 estimated a nearly 50% increase in the utilization of AI tools in education in the upcoming years. AI is helping streamline traditionally tedious tasks, such as grading, performance evaluations or progress reports. In addition to helping with operative tasks and testing, AI also plays a role in another trend — personalized education.

Software platforms such as Carnegie Learning serve as math education resource tools that provide helpful feedback for students and assign future lessons according to their progress.

AI is also playing a role in advancing accessibility with plug-ins such as Presentation Translator, a free tool that generates subtitles as the teacher speaks. This makes it easier for students with vision and hearing impairments to follow along in class, as well as students who may be viewing the lecture from home or who speak a different language.

3. Real-World Classroom

Education around the world is trending away from the traditional models towards a more dynamic approach to how students and educators interact. Teachers emphasize hands-on and experiential learning more. Additionally, educators are also paying greater attention to the growing field of trade schools.

While the primary focus of the education system remains obtaining a college degree, educators have placed more emphasis on trade schools and professions. As Career and Technical Education programs expand, more educators are introducing alternative career options in their classrooms. This trend also hopes to bridge the gap between academics and real-world performance.

4. Personalized Education

Advances in new technology, such as artificial intelligence, go hand in hand with a more personalized approach to an individual’s education. Making more administrative tasks less time-consuming in the classroom allows teachers to focus on individual students.

While technology is changing how we understand personalized education, the concept is not new. The recent trend in personalized education hopes to improve student and teacher relationships and assist students in their own academic journey.

5. Augmented/Virtual Reality

According to recent education trends, augmented reality and virtual reality are changing how science and physical education is taught. By making subjects more immersive, educators are able to better engage students in complicated concepts.

AR and VR are especially helpful when it comes to formulas and diagrams, and they make difficult lessons more intriguing to the audience.

6. Gamification

Gamification is a learning technique that uses elements of games, such as storytelling, rules and collaboration in a classroom environment. Games allow students to approach assignments in a creative way and can increase engagement across subjects.

Some examples of employing games in an education setting include referring to homework tasks as quests, referring to progress in terms of levels, and grading with points.

7. STEAM

Despite a renewed investment in STEM education in the last few years, science in elementary education is still declining at the national level. STEM education is a major trend in education. It encourages students to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Educators are asserting that creative problem-solving is essential for these disciplines. STEAM education adds Art to the curriculum and also supplies educators with additional tools to encourage hands-on learning.

8.  Genius Hour

Educators participating in Genius Hour allow students to work on a project of their choice for one hour a week. The idea suggests that setting aside time for students to focus on something they are passionate about will improve productivity.

Genius Hour was inspired by a time management practice established by Google, which allows employees to spend 20% of their time on a creative project. Because Genius Hour is a versatile concept, educators can set parameters based on their preferences and their students’ inclinations.

9. Growth Mindset

Current education trends rely on a modern understanding of learning and development. The abstract concept of growth mindset refers to a student’s understanding of their own abilities.

Instead of viewing their intellectual abilities as fixed and stagnant, a growth mindset reminds students that they are always in the process of learning. It also helps to remind them of the effort required to effect change. Growth mindset supports the argument that increased self-confidence in students improves their academic performance.

10. Maker Learning

Finally, maker education focuses on student agency in learning environments and increased attention to the world around them. It is a unique approach that focuses on changing the mindset around academics so that it is understood as part of a whole. There is an emphasis on community, and students are encouraged to design projects that can be utilized in real-life situations.

There are lots of other trends in education today. However, these are some of the biggest ones changing classrooms right before our eyes — and for the better.
